These ground-dwelling birds prefer dense woods, but when their populations grow, they move closer to cities and can be seen in parks. Some populations migrate in winter, but most birds stay in their summer residents. These birds are omnivorous; they feed in the morning and in the afternoon, and at night, they roost in trees. Adult birds are large and strong; they run fast and fly quick and are able to defend themselves against small predators. A lot of predators, such as foxes, coyotes and raccoons, feed on the eggs and chicks that can be found in the nest. To camouflage in the grass, hens with chicks are brown-colored and have no beautiful iridescent feathers characteristic of males. Humans are the only threat for adult birds.
