There exist 6 subspecies of these large birds. They are distributed throughout the USA and can be seen in some parts of Canada and South America. All subspecies are dark-colored; they vary slightly in coloration and distribution. In the eastern part of the USA, the most numerous Eastern subspecies can be seen. A lot of varieties are created by breeders through careful selective work. Most varieties are bred for meat, but some of them are kept as pets. Males are usually brighter than females, which are difficult to spot in the field when hatching the eggs and walking with chicks.
