These birds are native to America and not very popular as pets, but are raised as farm birds for their meat, eggs and feathers. The females of these birds are not very bright – only males have iridescent feathers. Females are gray or brown. These birds are not very noisy; they are easy to keep if provided with enough room and grass in the yard.

Some species migrate in winter, but the majority of these birds are the residents of one area, because they are opportunistic feeders and can thrive on almost everything they can find. They can be watched in spring during the breeding season. Domestic birds are unable to fly because they are large and heavy. Their untamed relatives are good runners and flyers, able to reach a speed of about 50 miles per hour in flight. They are usually unable to fly long distances. These birds are very vocal. Adult males utter very loud gobbles that can carry for over a mile to announce their presence to females and competing males. Hens and young males usually yelp.
