It’s difficult to see these wary birds in their natural habitats, because they avoid humans and have keen eyesight. In late February to early March, males begin gobbling in attempts to attract as many receptive females as possible. Gobbling begins before sunrise. The courtship of these birds is a wonderful sight. The male raises body feathers, fans the tail, and drops the wings alongside to the ground. His caruncles and head turn a bright red. Only the most dominant males can breed; subdominant and young males breed only a few hens.

Females of this species lay from 4 to 18 eggs and incubate them for about a months. The chicks are hatched hardy and independent and able to feed themselves within 24 hours. Hatchlings are fed a diet of worms, insects and spiders for rapid growth. They require more protein than adults do, so the mother has to catch more insects for them than for herself.
