Males don’t associate with hens outside of the breeding period; they live solitary lives or form small groups. For mating, bachelor males unite with the hens living in their home range. Mating flocks consist of 2 or 3 gobblers and 5 - 15 hens. Sometimes, they form harems of a single male and several females. Females spend the whole year with their chicks. They are able to feed in 24 hours after hatching, but they stay with the mother for about 10 months. Females stay in mother flock till the next spring; young males separate from their brood and form separate flocks in late fall. Young males sometimes communicate with adult males. Hens often form multiple hen-brood flocks in late summer and fall. Hens that are unsuccessful in nesting because of predators who destroyed their nests, form their own flocks. Wild turkey anatomy can be learnt by photo galleries or pictures on special educational websites.
