The scientific name of the species is Meleagris gallopavo of the family Phasianidae, order Galliformes. These birds are the heaviest of their order, with the wingspan of up to 1.8 meters. These birds display sexual dimorphism, with females being much smaller and paler than males. Males are very bright and attractive with red wattles on the throat and neck and long feathers that have red, green, copper, bronze, and gold iridescence. Females come in shades of gray and brown, which protects them and their nests in the tall grass. Males are polygamous, but females are usually monogamous, living on the home range of dominant males.
