Wild Turkey Farm -
breeders, breeder
These polygamous birds live separately and unite only for breeding. Mating flocks consist of several adult males and 5 - 15 hens, depending on the amount of hens in the area and the number of other dominant males. A flock has a dominant male who does all of the mating and one or two subdominant younger birds who fight off other rival gobblers. After several years, they throw the dominant male down or leave the flock searching for a separate home range. Young and weak males cannot breed, but all receptive females can find a male for breeding. After the breeding season, males roam over their territory and search for hens that have lost their nests or are unsuccessful in nesting to breed again.
