Wild Turkeys - Description
There are six species of wild turkeys: Eastern, Merriam's, Rio Grande, Florida, Mexican and Yucatan offsprings. Wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) are noticeably different from their domesticated counterparts. They are smaller and faster. It is not so easy to hunt a wild turkey as some people believe. They can fly very well. Despite their status as wild animals, they can approach populated areas and even become a sheer nuisance.
Wild Turkeys - Mating Ritual
A male of the wild turkey species has a conspicuously bright coloring of plumage. It is usually iridescent brown. In the way of attracting females, they are very much like peacocks. They have fan-like fancy tails and a cocky strut. They occupy a comfortable position on trees and gobble for hens. Courtship ritual is reminiscent of some exquisite dance. Male turkeys weigh about 18 pounds. Females are smaller and duller. They weigh only 10 pounds. A male bird can stand 5 feet tall.
Male turkeys (Toms, Gobblers) have featherless necks and heads. They may change color according to the bird's frame of mind. In a calm state, they remain gray or blue. If angry or during courtship, the neck and the head become bright red. Toms have spurs in the lower part of their legs.
Male turkeys have peculiar fleshy growths on the neck, under the chin and above the beak. The one in the throat area is termed 'caruncle'. 'Wattles' are located under the chin and the 'snood' lies flapping on the beak. The snood is also a hearing organ, and it can perceive sounds five times more effectively than the human ear. Like head and neck, these three pieces of flesh obtain red color in states of mind mentioned above for turkeys.
